The Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) was established in 2000, as the operating arm of the Dawson City Arts Society, with an ambitious mandate to develop a broad range of arts programming to enrich the social, cultural and economic fabric of the Yukon Territory.

The Yukon Riverside Arts Festival is an annual KIAC summer event as part of Dawson City's Discovery Days weekend, August 14,15,16, 2009. As the name suggests the venue is parkland adjacent to the mighty Yukon River with participating artists coming from across the Yukon -Whitehorse, Carcross, Lake Laberge, Mayo, Keno, Dawson and NWT - Inuvik and Tsiigehtchic.

Up to 30 artists participate, Friday through Sunday, showcasing their respective mediums with interactive or demonstrative activities. Interactive indicates that the activity allows for a degree of public participation (a small fee may be charged to offset cost of materials) and demonstrative means that the artist works while the public observes (with the possibility of some question and answer exchange).

Previous festivals have featured work in: acrylic, oil, watercolor painting, bookbinding, carving, knife making, printmaking, pottery, sculpture, spinning, willow basketry, beadwork, blacksmithing, caribou hair tufting, ceramics, fabric arts, glass lamp making, photography, and stained glass. This year, we welcome installation and performance art as well.

A "Market Gallery" is part of the venue for display and sale of work by participating artists. Event volunteers sell the work and artists are free to focus their time in the interactive/demonstrative tents. Artists are encouraged to spend time in the merchandise tent and it usually reflects in increased sales. All participants are asked to supply an inventory list and short biography for use in this tent.

Artists are given an honorarium to help offset expenses and all participants experience our renowned hospitality, including superb food and refreshments. We can assist artists in finding accommodations including billeting, camping or discounted hotel room options.
