The
Odd Gallery is an artist run centre housed in the Klondike Institute
of Art and Culture that is operated by the Dawson City Arts Society.
DCAS is a non-profit organization with a mandate to create an
environment for the advancement of the arts in the Yukon Territory.
The Odd Gallery’s year-round programming features solo and
group exhibitions (juried by committee) by regional, national
and international visual artists, as well as the annual thematic
project The Natural & The Manufactured, and a wide
array of outreach programming including artist talks, openings,
lectures, screenings, youth programs and other special events.
Gallery programming aims to foster professionalism and appreciation
of regional visual arts practice, and provides the community with
exposure and access to a diverse range of contemporary visual
arts practices and theories.
Deadline: April 1, 2008 - Postmarked
For both the General Call and The Natural & The Manufactured
NOTE:
Applications posted after April 1 may still be considered at the
discretion of the Selections Committee.
General Call:
The Odd Gallery accepts proposals from artists and curators
for one deadline of April 1 annually. Proposals postmarked
by April 1, 2008 will be considered for the 2009 exhibition season
that runs from January 2009 to December 2009. The Gallery encourages
proposals from artists from diverse cultural and regional communities
of Canada.
Thematic
Call: The Natural & The Manufactured - An Odd Gallery
& KIAC Artist in Residence Project:
The Natural & The Manufactured is conceived as an
ongoing, annual project to involve visual, media and interdisciplinary
artists, curators, art historians, writers and cultural thinkers
through residencies, exhibitions, lectures, essays and workshops.
The Gallery seeks proposals from visual artists working in all
media for gallery-based and temporary off-venue exhibitions such
as outdoor and site-specific installations. Artists may propose
completed work or new work and are encouraged to apply for a concurrent
residency with KIAC’s Artist in Residence Program. Please
read the Residency Call
for Submissions & Application Guidelines, and do submit
a completed application package for residency.
Currently, project activities are presented as part of KIAC’s
annual Yukon Riverside Arts Festival that takes place in mid-August
and includes exhibitions (one gallery-based & one outdoor-based),
opening receptions, artist talks and guest lectures intended to
stimulate and engage audiences in a re-examination of the various
cultural and economic values imposed on the environment, while
exploring alternative political, social, economic and aesthetic
agendas and strategies towards a re-interpretation of the regional
landscape and social infrastructure.
Odd Gallery and KIAC Artist in Residence thematic works aim to
explore issues related to land based, site-specific and environmental
art practices - the meaning of geography and the geography of
meaning, the ephemeral and the concrete, the transitory nature
of "nature" and our philosophical need to resist and
respond to it.
In addition to fees for gallery-based exhibitions, the Gallery
pays artists’ fees for temporary outdoor exhibitions - the
amount will be based upon the nature of the work and the venue.
The Gallery will also apply for additional project funding in
order to increase the level of assistance provided to the artist
including shipping, travel, and a residency stipend. The Gallery
will assist artists with seeking and acquiring any necessary permission
for the use of off-venue sites.
Please Mark Your Proposal Package “The Natural & The
Manufactured.”
